#003: Every Great Idea Starts With a Shift

A small change in perspective can unlock a wave of new ideas, especially when presenting on camera. Dr. Edward de Bono’s “Willingness to Explore” reminds us that how we see a problem often limits us. If you’ve ever felt self-conscious or exposed in front of the camera, those feelings can impact your delivery. But by letting go and embracing your true self, your message will shine. Shift your perspective, and your story will connect.

Begin with Small Steps...

Sometimes our perspective on an issue, could be the single thing that keeps us from getting anywhere. And a tiny shift of perspective, might just be the thing to begin a whole cascade of new ideas and enthused energy – particularly when it comes to speaking in front of the camera.

Dr Edward do Bono first talked about the “Willingness to Explore” in his early books back in the 70’s. A lot of his work revolves around how the mind perceives a particular problem, and of course, how one then goes about solving for that perception of a problem. In my experience with innovation and idea creation, people often solve for the wrong problem. But that’s a whole other conversation!

At times I’ve worked with presenters who might have a slightly tainted view about speaking in front of a camera. It might be that they feel exposed, or that they could come across as a “know-all” or “braggard”. People might be introverts, or just uncomfortable with the way they look or sound when they watch play-back.

For whatever reason you may have a negative perception of this experience, I am pretty certain that this emotion will carry in your performance – and although you’d never say it out loud during the talk, that attitude would be present in posture, gestures or deeply hidden somewhere in a facial expression or your eyes.

So here’s my appeal for you to let that feeling go, because it doesn’t serve you. If you’re needing to get a message across, there’s no better way than using video. It doesn’t have to be LIVE, you could consider recording a webinar or talk. Be there can be no doubt that audiences respond well to video messaging.

And you don’t need to be Meryl Streep or Brad Pitt. But you have to be authentic and you have to be sincere. And if that comes across, warts and all, with truth – your audience will appreciate you. And they’ll most likely love your message.

It is your job to connect with them.

So get ready to pucker up and shift that perception that it is hard, difficult, impossible, makes you nervous, look fat, thin, too tall – or whatever other excuse you could add here. Know that you’re perfect as you are. We all see and hear you all day long, exactly as that fabulous, engaging and smart human that you are.

Now, take a deep breath. And attack that message with all your heart, so it breaks through the lens and the message reaches an audience WAITING to applaud you!
